About The Artwork

Size: 140x100cm Medium: oil on canvas Year: 2019 Frame: unframed Condition: ships in a tube/reinforced tall box Signature: signed on the back I wanted to create a Cyberpunk image inspired by Philip K. Dick’s work, but in the process I realized the landscape I was painting looked more like hanging laundry. So I changed it to suit the feeling it gave me. No more androids and spaceships, but instead a 1950s era take on Vermeer’s women, the housewife trapped in a “dream”, or rather a claustrophobic nightmare with hanging drapes and a rotating mechanism that’s twisting everything like the inner workings of a washing machine. I find the images and commercials of the 50s era, with the perfect housewives and husbands in business suits nauseating, especially looking at the context of a nuclear bomb possibly exploding in your backyard. I tried to capture this in one image: charred background, with clean laundry in the foreground, twisting, not in the wind, but on a mechanical axis.

I like to question everything. What is reality? What is the truth? What lies beneath the surface of things? People connect to images and symbols through repetition. We recognize something because we've seen it before. Art makes it possible to break this pattern, to create images (in this case) that reflect another order of things, being governed by another set of rules. Isn't that great? Doesn't seeing something new and unexplained excite you? Or maybe it scares you. Maybe you start questioning things, like I do. And that’s when the magic happens. Like listening to your favorite music for the first time, and thinking, well... it’s OK, and than, after listening to it multiple times you were forever hooked by the magic. I Hope this happens to you here. Always expect the unexpected. Darius
