About The Artwork

Persi Darukhanawala’s critical engagement with the world sometimes means not being afraid to say when things aren’t right – be it intrinsic (inside, psychological) or extrinsic (the external environment: family, friends, politics etc.). But it also sometimes means not being afraid to say when things are right and life is charged with hope and electricity, with the power of human potential and a sense of (however necessarily temporary) limitless happiness. As Darukhanawala himself has said of this series of works on Japanese paper: ‘I find the combination of new (acrylic, manufactured, artificial) and old (sekishu-shi paper, hand-made, carefully, crafted, natural) reflective of so much in my everyday internal and external life. It is what my life is.’ This picture, with its tight emotional bundle of plump-emaciated lines, looks different almost every time one looks at it – perhaps on account of the fact the general (simple lines) has a symbiotic relationship with the specific (there is a distinct sense of life, explosive vertical movement, even happy, epiphanic enlightenment) , all perhaps emanating from the artist’s ever-changing and -developing self and moods! This artefact is a reminder, a memory, proof that there was, during the moments when it was made, a fantastic day … and soon there will be another one. Dimensions include frame.

‘My pictures are songs: explosions of energy, meaning and communication. They are spurs for communication with the self and others.’ (Persi Darukhanawala) Persi Darukhanawala’s minimal pictures explore the uncertainty (and so, de facto, excitement) of life (ars longa, vita brevis). With multivalent richness, Darukhanawala’s painting-songs somehow communicate endless, elusive psychologies rather than reproducing already-known visuals. Like the vibrant songs with which they have polylogues, the paintings are life-embracing, positive but equally critical and the product of a spirit in revolt (‘l’homme révolté’). Darukhanawala has attracted sustained interest from academics, critics, individual collectors as well as design houses and hotels. He was shortlisted for the prestigious Art Olympia 2017 in Tokyo, Japan.
