Scottish textile artist and designer Lucy Simpson, (b.1991) studied Design & Applied Arts: Printed Textiles at Edinburgh College of Art, graduating with B.A. in 2013 and M.A. in 2014. Invited to exhibit at the ex-Ansaldo in Milan during design week 2015, she decided to settle in Italy and lives in Milan. Lucy has always been drawn to natural forms, in particular rock formations and their strata. A visual collector of tactile quality, she is pulled to the minerals’ nuances of surface and colour, each layer adding to their rich mystique. Her instinctive brush work and the ethereal formations she creates are an incessant act through which she is in constant search of exploring how paint and mark-making can convey the poetry of suggestion. Lucy’s creative process is not dissimilar to the complex composition of the minerals that she observes, each painting made up of multiple layers, impulsively and yet attentively created at the same time. She is currently Professor of various MA + BA courses in Textile Design at NABA (Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti ) in Milan and has recently designed collections of textiles for Jil Sander, Milan.
