About The Artwork

I painted this to start a dialogue about the use of the burka in the contemporary times. It is part of a serie called "Talking about women" and my intention is to create awareness about this matter and help other people to express their feelings. The burka has its origins many centuries before the Islam and it was used by men and women to prevent and protect themselves from the climatic conditions of the dessert. It is not mentioned in the Coran (the dress code talks about a humble and low profile attitude, desaturated colours, not showing breasts or anything that can be seen as a provocation, but that's it). Then it became mandatory in the beggining of the 20th century under the taliban regime in Afghanistan. The use of it brings many health problems to body and mind. It has been established by credible scientific evidence that almost all women who wear the full hijab are chronically deficient in Vitamin D. Low levels of it are related to osteoporosis and many other disorders including cardiovascular diseases, type 1 diabetes, multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis. And infants borned from vitamin D deficient mothers have been found to suffer from an increased prevalence of seizures. We must think if under the false belief of "protection" it is happening exactly the opposite. Ayaan Hirsi wrote a very interesting book called "Why Islam needs a reformation now" and I was inspired by her thoughts and her courage to fight this problematic that affects not only muslim women and their community, but all the women and men from the world, as we are all one in our way to the evolution.
