ABOUT THE ARTWORK

AL-ALAQ (96:5) "Who taught man what he did not know." In this piece of art, the Tibetan geometric pattern is coupled with square Kufic transcript. Calligraphy in sub-continent is heavily dominated by two scripts, Nakhs and Taaliq. The modernized Kufic script is whereas, a calculated placement of squares on virtual grid. A square of definite side-length has been chosen for this painting. Said squares are combined vertically and horizontally to write Verse 7 of Surah Alaq. The pattern (on left) in the painting is inspired by a Tibetan rug design, category ‘repeating geometric structure’ (refer book Oriental Rugs (Murray Eiland; 1998)). The pattern and square Kufic script are closely related i.e. the squares of definite size are woven on a grid. Besides rug patterns, till 8th century, what immediately distinguished the Tibetan rugs from other carpets in the world was essentially the red dye. A deeper red shade, shimmering gold and chalky soft blue are introduced in the painting.

By academic degree and profession, I am Aerospace Engineer. By heart, I am an artist. Being an artist, has been a self taught journey for me. Both what-to-paint and how-to-paint is continuously evolving and is free from rules. Besides colors, I am using my words on canvas too. I am an unpublished writer of two books. Again, what-to-write and how-to-write is continuously evolving and is free from rules. This freedom has let me introduce eccentricity equally on canvas and on paper. The only rule which stays with my paintings and writings is LET IT BE. Meadows are taking rectangular paths; And if it is, so let it be. Wind is whispering in thinning grass; And if it is, so let it be. Rain is falling upside down; And if it is, so let it be. A meteor is coming to kiss the ground; And if it is, so let it be. Stairs have found to climb the sky; And if it is , so let it be. Jewels are spread for you to try; And if it is, so let it be. Fish is sharing flight with birds; And if it is, so let it be. I am going to stay with herds; And if it is, so let it be! With ZMTIA, let's dive deep into colors and words.
