About The Artwork

The creation of this painting occurred during my first winter as a resident of Canada. Everything I could see was thickly coated with snow, and the subzero temperatures were a shock. I painted this artwork for an exhibition I had coming up titled Absence Makes the Heart Grow Fonder. This title has a personal meaning to me. I have lived in four different countries throughout the past eight years, and my sense of home is gone. The process of creating work for this exhibition helped me reflect upon what it means to lose a sense of home and creating a new one somewhere else. Although I initially created Absence 8 for this exhibition, it became it's own separate work. The visual qualities are very unique. The indigo ink spreads across the white gesso, and the faint colors of pink and turquoise from the under layer show through. This artwork is unique because it is on a circle-shaped canvas. The thick gesso has lines scratched through it to create narrow channels for the ink to flow into. There is a linear quality, but also a wild variety of drips from the ink. The abstract nature of the Absence 8 lends itself to many interpretations by the viewer.
