ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Aiona A references a sacred place founded by Swiss artist Emma Kunz in the late 1800's. She believed in filling visual objects with intention via geometric configurations. In this painting I try to capture the essence of street art, contemporary abstract painting processes along with an expression that offers a visual simultaneity. I work these compositions much like an armature upon which intellectual ideas can hang. This work is on panel and has a 3" deep beveled edge. The edge is painted florescent yellow so the piece appears to radiate a soft, subtle golden aura. I prepare the panel with fresco then stain with turquoise powdered pigments. I paint the work with a combination of free mark making, silk screening and spray paint techniques. My work from this series has been selected by Kelly Shindler of the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis and Julie Rodrigues Widholm for the publication, New American Paintings. Similar works have been displayed at the Elmhurst Museum, the Evansville Museum and the St. Louis University Museum of Art.
