About The Artwork

Albatross in the Air Near NZ is based on the story my sister told me about --seeing a majestic albatross flying across the sky above them on their sail boat. The water evokes movement and the style was inspired by he artist Vija Celmins. The painting and poem I wrote based on my sister's story and Coleridge's Rime of the Ancient Mariner was reproduced in the zine Parlor Pages this year. The point of view would not be possible without drone technology and photography. At first glance the viewer might take the pov for granted because we are becoming used to seeing photographs of birds in flight as if we are flying with them. As a painting, the vantage becomes linked to the contemporary and thus, could not have been created before the 1980's when unmanned aerial photography devices became available to governments to track persons of interest. In this case, the albatross is the subject and animal of interest; caught in time and flight by this painted representation.
