"Alle Dinge" / "All things" from the series "Translation of memories" in cooperation with Thomas Paul. Acrylic on canvas 81 x 116 cm 2024 The following experiment: The text of one person is translated into an image by another, without any knowledge of its origin or background. This experiment aims to trace the first impulse, the fixation of the 'in-between.' It starts with reading the text, a blank sheet, and capturing the first inner images that tempt one to pick up a pencil or brush for an initial sketch. The sketch serves as the starting point for translating into the image. Thus, the image is not an illustration of the text, but an attempt to transfer it into another medium. The overarching question concerns us as artists: How is an image created? What is its prehistory, which inner images develop beforehand? At what point does the painted image in the painting process detach from the inner image and become independent? Are holding on and letting go even the roots of creativity? A.K. & T.P March 2024

Arthur Kunz is a trained computer scientist and cosmopolitan. Born in 1978 in the former USSR, he grew up in Bietigheim and later lived in Vienna and Berlin. So his identity is made up of various elements and cultures. The same can be said about his pictures. He describes himself as a bag man who collects literature, screenshots, computer games and his own personal history from the city's refuse bins. All of these elements are juxtaposed in paintings, drawings and books. Filled with strong signs, the works appear at first glance like drawings by a teenager, in which there is also a lot of irony and distance. But under the apparently childish surface there is something hectic and irresponsible, something lustful and erotic. Arthur Kunz paints in a way that only feigns sloppiness, because the pictures are “realistic and carefully executed.” In his composition he moves the attention of the spectator to the edges of the picture thereby challenging the traditional centre of a painting. As a real painter, he deals extensively with questions of color and composition, develops the pictures over a long period of time often in only small steps and likes to create multi-serially. Arthur Kunz lives and works in Langen, Germany.
