About the Artist

Anik Lapointe

Canada

I am a self-taught abstract painter living in the Eastern Townships (Quebec, Canada). My artistic journey began in the early 2000s through atmospheric photography, with a particular fascination for abandoned places and forgotten spaces shaped by time and memory. Over time, I felt the need to move beyond the lens and work more directly with matter itself. Abstract painting had been quietly living within me for years before I finally allowed myself to explore it fully.

As a self-taught artist, my process is rooted in intuition, experimentation, and freedom. I work with a variety of mediums including acrylic, collage, oil pastel, charcoal, and textured materials, often building my pieces through layers, transparencies, and imperfect gestures. My background in photography continues to influence my sense of composition, but painting allows me to approach creation in a more instinctive and tactile way.

Texture and color are at the heart of my work. I am drawn to imperfect forms, overflowing textures, and organic movement. Within my paintings, hints of landscapes or natural elements may emerge : a wave, a mist, a mountain, a flower, without ever becoming fully defined. I enjoy leaving space for interpretation, allowing each viewer to discover their own impressions and emotions within the work.

By nature, I am deeply sensitive to the rhythm and weight of the world around me, and that emotional intensity often finds its way into my paintings. My work explores the space between tension and softness, turbulence and calm. I paint as a way to slow down, to create beauty, and to quiet my mind. If my paintings can also offer a moment of pause, reflection, or escape to others, then they continue their journey beyond me.
