ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This piece is a classic case of starting off with one idea and ended up with a something else. The pasting was curvaceous and it was always going to be something ‘watery’! But as I painted… this slightly chaotic, oceanic turbulence began to appear, the strong deep blue cutting through. What would have been the images of sea sponges (bottom right) became the foaming spray of the waves. Our Oceans need humanity’s understanding and care, as we are all one with everything… isn’t that self-care?... whichever way we look at it? My work has an emphasis on texture and in this painting I have used acrylic paste with palette knives to create the underlying structure and then coloured with acrylic paint using various techniques with brush and rag and applied luscious, thick layers of paint to increase the energy of the piece. This painting is on 100% cotton canvas stretched over a deep (approx 3.7cm) wooden frame and is signed on the front. It does not require additional framing and is shipped with hooks and wire so that it can be hung immediately after unwrapping.

I create art to give pleasure, to myself whilst creating it and to others to uplift, fascinate and resonate with each person. I love texture and I am fascinated by colour and light. I enjoy using texture mediums to create interesting surfaces which I then colour. Many of my paintings have textured contours which cast shadows that change as the light changes and give a different life to each piece throughout a day. I’m captivated by the different ways paint behaves depending on how it’s used, the way the strokes of a brush or palette knife leave their mark, the way the paint mixes and changes with every pass. I love to watch my paintings unfold before me, as although I may start with an idea, I let the paint itself dictate how the piece evolves. Abstractionism is perfect for allowing the colour and form of my work to express the nuances of the paint and mediums themselves, unconstrained by realistic form.
