ABOUT THE ARTWORK
The story of Saint Anthony preaching to the fish comes from the book ‘The Fioretti of St. Francis’. In this story the town folk of some Italian city are not interested in what Anthony has to say, so instead het turns his attention to the fish in a nearby lake. They are much more civilised, even so that the big fish make room for the smaller ones so that they can hear him all the better. The painting is made on a piece of slate, part of which has been cut out.
