The recent passing of Richard Serra inspired this piece. His controversial works are displayed all over the world, yet many question whether his rusted walls and curves are even art. I recall his first piece installed here in my home city in the early 80's. People were appalled by the rusted metal walls that made up a large polygonal shape planted in the earth. Outrage by many, while others were inspired to look further into themselves, determining exactly what it is that they considered art to be. It's still there today. I drive by it at least once a week and still enjoy it. Over the years I've produced a number of pieces that many huff at and offer the standard comment "my four year old can do that". I say more power to the four year old. My barometer is whether I would display a piece I've created in my own home. The response to this piece, "Artistic Tolerance" is a resounding yes. I like the color, the composition and the haphazardness of it as a whole. It speaks to me on an artistic level and again, causes me to consider what exactly art is to me.

"Predictably unpredictable" describes my process. Using mostly brayers to apply and manipulate acrylics, the outcome is often somewhat unexpected, and the discovery factor is high. I have an idea of what will occur when I put paint to canvas, but not an exact one. My process is one of discovery and exploration, continually experimenting with color, texture and underpainting, with a healthy dose of “what happens if”. In addition to brayers, I use rags, fingers, palette knives, squirt bottles and the occasional brush, graphite and marker. The primary focus with most of my work is the affect humans have on the natural world. In the bulk of my paintings, the natural world is represented by color. Man's footprint appears as black lines, marks and shapes. The viewer determines if our imprint is a positive or negative one.
