"Astronaut Double Disaster in Purple & Green" - original artwork on 300gsm Italian paper Painting

"Astronaut Double Disaster in Aqua & Yellow" is an 11” x 15” original painting with silkscreen on paper and is part of the "Luxurious Disaster: A 21st Century Tale of Love, Fame & Tragedy" series of pop artworks by Taylor Smith. In this series, I have created a loosely connected group of artworks which take as their subjects 1960s space travel and the astronaut program, vintage advertising images, comic book art, 20th Century Americana, the human body, consumer products and fashion luxury brands, iconic imagery, politics, gun culture, prescription drugs and the concept of failing technology through glitched computer data corruption. These original hand-painted and silkscreened, unique artworks appropriate source material from history, social media, pop culture, art history, vintage newspapers and the local shopping mall. I use oil paint, enamel and screen printing as a means to fix my images on Fabriano Premium 300gsm heavy Italian cotton paper which is mould-made and acid free, guaranteeing extremely long conservation over time. I am attempting to fuse separate worlds together — the visual power of mid-century uniquely American iconography, wealth, fashion and money juxtaposed against income disparity, conflict, politics and power. These paintings on extremely fine quality Italian paper are suggested to be framed with 3" to 4" archival mat board and a simple neutral color frame to allow the artwork to stand out.
