About The Artwork

The sunsets in Moray, Scotland can be dramatic, and doubly so when witnessed by the sea. In this composition I used two 90cm square canvases to encapsulate two halves of the same story, With the light and the compositions being echoes of each other. The cloud forms echo the sculpt of the wave and the colours echo across the panels too. This ties them together as they tell the story of this sunset, and the divide between land/sea and sky takes place at the edges of the canvases. Based on the coastline at the mouth of the famous River Spey which flows through Whisky Country, this painting was at the time my largest painting. Taking nearly 3 months, I worked to make sure each colour was given a voice, and the light allowed to dance off the canvas. With this piece, I wanted to invoke the way the view makes me feel outside of time. To let it hold you in that moment for longer than should be possible. I wanted to open up those fleeting minutes as the sun blossoms into the horizon, and allow the viewer to hold them in their eye for as long as they wish. The painting is unvarnished and the image carries on around the edges of each canvas. Each canvas is fitted to the frame individually, with a gap between them, and the frame. Framing material sits behind this midpoint, providing structural and aesthetic continuity. The frame has two brackets, two thirds of the way up on each side, allowing the painting to be hung flat against the wall. The brackets are affixed to the frame and not the canvas stretchers. This piece will ship in a bespoke wooden crate, to provide maximum peace of mind during transit.

I grew up around the coast lines of England and Scotland, and spent 18 years working offshore. When this career came to an end I returned to paintiing and drew upon my experiences in my landscape. I work to convey my emotions to the viewer, allowing them to feel the portrayed landscape as I did.
