This painting evokes a historical event that happened in the Middle Ages in the Limousin region of France. The terrible evil caused by the ergot of rye could not be overcome, the religious authorities decided to take the relics out of the churches and monasteries and to walk them in the streets of the cities and villages. The operation having been a success, since that time every spts years the relics are again shown to the population during great processions.
