ABOUT THE ARTWORK
This expressive, large, bold, lively abstract painting was the first in my 'Autumn series'. It was inspired by the colours around my old city art studio in the centre of Sheffield (UK) in Autumn. I had just moved studios and the view from my window showed the Autumn colours juxtaposed with the modern and industrial skyline of Sheffield. The intention is to evoke a sense of changing states and some trepidation that can often come with that. I think the painting requires some unravelling in the mind and the warm colours balance this. The painting is varnished with a high quality satin oil paint varnish that will help protect the painting from dust, grease and UV damage. The oil paints are a high quality pigment and I always use Premium Wide depth 10oz Stretched Cotton Canvas. I use an ECO Green alternative to traditional turpentine.

I draw my inspiration from the constant possibilities of painting and the challenge of its unpredictable nature in conveying a subject. I am most interested in the process of painting and the expression it provides, translating a depth of feeling that is both personal but also shared with the viewer. Psychotherapy has directly influenced recent work and renewed my interest in abstract expressionism with the freedom of colour, line and allowing the subconscious and memory to guide my work. My current work explores the raw emotions I have experienced through personal challenges including the corrosive effects of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), infertility and a recent incurable auto-immune disease diagnosis. Whilst these experiences are highly personal, I believe that by exploring those emotions in my work I am creating a voice where one might normally be at risk of being suppressed and hidden.
