Balboa Park Parking Lot Construction (Wally's Tree) - Limited Edition 1 of 1 Painting

This work in a sense, documents shifts in the urban landscape in central San Diego per my lived experience. My interest lies in the implications associated with urban infill and the replacement of an existing building with a new structure; the promotion of disposability, and the displacement of natural spaces. I spend extensive time performing on-site documentation through photographs and drawings which I use to build a collage that forms the framework for the final painting. I work to incorporate the site in various formats, utilizing the pattern of woodprints taken from razed tree stumps, in the case of this painting. This image reflects the frozen moments of natural canyon demolition and parking lot construction, forming a hybrid narrative of past moments.
