This painting is part of a series I painted exploring the human tendency to anthropomorphize objects, especially ones made in our own image. From the moment we receive our first stuffed toy or doll, we begin to think of it as another personality -- one capable of reflecting our own feelings back to us. As a portrait painter, I'm accustomed to painting living people. In this case, I was interested in exploring the possibility that viewers would be both amused and intrigued by the suggestion that these two styrene heads were engaged in a conversation, possibly about the balloons casting shadows on the wall between them. A head without a body can’t go anywhere, but a head apparently watching balloons in the sky is a head that is dreaming, perhaps of better things. In addition to earth tones, I have used iridescent pigments to create luster and depth in the violet-grey shadows. This painting is ready to be framed, although the sides of the cradled panel have been painted black and the back is wired, so it may simply be hung as it is.
