The Bank of the Ganges in Varanasi, India. A wonder of the world and a place to do your washing. I love the both / and nature of the space- somewhere people spend thousands of dollars to go see yet at the same time a space where residents hang their laundry to dry. As a tourist, the clothing feels foreign, magical. It feels like art. To a local, their undergarments being the subject of a painting would seem ridiculous. As an artist, finding the space between these two- celebrating the ordinary and the places we call home- excites me. I hope you feel the breeze coming off the river and floating through the clothes, transporting you to a far off land or your own backyard. About the Series: In 1967, my grandmother packed up her life and left her family in India to be with my grandfather who had moved to the United States. She left with my father, who was two years old, and moved to a place where she did not speak the language in hopes of securing a better future. Fifty years later, I traveled to India to meet my extended family for the first time. The experience of sharing tears, food, and hugs with women I had just met is impossible to put in words. It was amazing to see the love that can be shared between humans who barely know one another, yet recognize we share a piece of the same story. I believe this story is one that many individuals can relate to: a story of passage, a story of family, and a story of love. This series titled “Connection” explores what it means to come home. These women and their stories have shaped me in ways I cannot fully comprehend, yet I recognize the strength of my grandmother and the love shared across oceans is not unique. It is an integral part of the immigrant experience and one that deserves to be shared.

Erica Prasad is an Indian-American painter whose work depicts the beauty of the ordinary and the way a space, person or landscape makes her feel. Primarily working with oil on canvas, her pieces are created with an expressive style that leans toward realism while exploring the magic of color that can only be achieved through oil paint. From the Artist: I paint snapshots of tender, ordinary life. My work is a study of intimate moments of human connection that ground us and help us realize our fundamental relation to one another. Beginning with memories from my own life, I choose a frame and a color palette based on the way the experience made me feel. I use detailed textures such as fabric or wrinkles to create pieces that feel deeply personal yet universal. Combined with vibrant colors and fluid brush strokes, I aim to provide a sense of comfort and familiarity in the images portrayed. Ultimately, I hope the viewer is able to recognize a piece of their own story and move forward to see a world of hope and compassion we can create together.
