ABOUT THE ARTWORK
This piece is acrylic and charcoal on linen, mounted on panel. The raw linen is a beautiful, neutral color surface to work on and I chose it because the charcoal line work looks wonderful on it. In combination with the black paint and charcoal, it also has an austere appearance which I wanted. The line work is modeled after a set of my grandfather's civil-engineering diagrams from the mid-1940's. The minimal composition and color palette is inspired by some early 20th-century family photographs that I found in a small Baptist church in eastern Wyoming. This is a piece that touches on family history, memory, identity, loss, and re-connection in a highly abstract manner.
