In the near future, in a far off land, womxn of traumatic pasts are triggered to grow into gigantic bodies. The more pain they’ve survived, the bigger they grow—so big, that nothing can hurt them anymore. Even when a horrified army of tiny soldiers attack, the giants are unconquerable. So they move, and move, and move. The earth rumbles and shakes as they roam open spaces, seeking refuge in the only thing that can contain them: wildness. “I rise from my worst disasters, I turn, I change.” Virginia Woolf, The Waves

Artist Meg Lionel Murphy’s paintings are informed by debilitating PTSD from severe domestic violence. Over the past few years, she has compulsively painted heartbroken femmes that magically grow larger, stronger, and scarier than the world around them. As the paintings grow in number, she grows just a little larger, stronger, and scarier too. Meg works from rural Wisconsin. She splits her time painting between a little blue shack in a junkyard and the storefront artist collective, The Yellow Room.
