About The Artwork

Please, let me welcome you to join me in my Scottish Highlands-based studio, in our FREE-TO-STREAM behind-the-scenes video of the Story Vignette ‘Battling the Sycamosaur’, in which you watch me at my easel, creating this mixed-media painting, from the first drawing-out to the finishing touches - available from my official account on Vimeo – www.vimeo.com/497263773 (copy & paste in your browser)) ‘Battling the Sycamosaur’, is a narrative, mixed-media vignette painting that appears in Chapter 1 of ‘Webstrand, the Tooth Gatherer’ my illustrated fantasy folklore book from ‘Paul Taggart’s Elphen Chronicles’ – currently available as the Artists First Edition Video-StoryBook on Vimeo – www.vimeo.com/ondemand/elphenchroniclestwo (copy & paste in your browser) PAINTING TECHNIQUE & PROCESS used for this vignette painting is totally unique to myself; having been developed specifically for the collection of vignettes featured in my book ‘Webstrand, the Tooth Gatherer’ from ‘Paul Taggart’s Elphen Chronicles’. Traditional oil painting techniques such as glazing, tinting, impasto etc. are fundamental to my work as a Fine Artist and these vignettes are no exception; with the five –layer process captured on camera, as I worked away at my easel. NOTE FOR COLLECTOR The original painting will be shipped flat, fixed behind an acid-free window mount, sandwiched between an acid-free backing and a polycarbonate front, securely taped around the edges to prevent ingress of moisture. This will enable the collector to commission a frame of their choosing, to complement the environment in which the painting will be hung. OPEN PRINTS of this painting are available here in Saatchi Art. Paul Taggart’s Elphen Chronicles “Next time you look up into the royal blue of an evening sky and spy a falling star, think of the Elphen. Somewhere, not so far away, they are gathering their numbers to follow that star until it reaches Earth; where, hidden in the undergrowth they will find their treasure, an Elphen Egg, which has traversed the Starfields to reach its destination. You may well see them on their journey home, carrying their egg between them. Tiny specks against the night sky; only visible when they cross a bright star, or the face of a full moon. Finding an Elphen Egg was seen by many of the old societies of humankind as being a harbinger of good luck. Then, such searches were common place; now, however, it is difficult to find evidence of this practice. There are hints here and whispers there, but perhaps that knowledge no longer exists.” Thus it is chronicled - or, is it simply that the Elphen have sprinkled their Forgettle Dust over those whom have discovered their existence? We will never know for sure, but can only dream of what might be, in the vivid accounts and tales, relayed through the writings and paintings of Paul Taggart’s Elphen Chronicles. Webstrand, the Tooth Gatherer Elphen folklore, such as that relating to the Earthling, Fizz and her extraordinary experience on the planet Shimmistra, are chronicled in the pages of ‘Webstrand, the Tooth Gatherer’. Not the first of these folktales to be recorded, by any means, as other happenings in the world of Elphen have been lovingly captured for posterity, through further works of art and written accounts in Paul Taggart’s Elphen Chronicles. There are tales of Artimus Glin, an itinerant artist; whose life-changing meeting with the Elphen Swarm Leader, Lacewing results in a creative legacy that was posthumously handed down to his grandson Zand. Zand’s own first encounter with the Elphen, Weftwing, is tenderly transcribed from his childhood memories; as is his introduction to Fizz and their subsequent life-long friendship, supported by their individual Elphen mentors. Through Paul Taggart’s Elphen Chronicles we come to recognize the significance of Starfire, the Elphen Wizard and Seer, along with his fellow Swarm Leaders, Webstrand, Lacewing and Weftwing, to name but a few. We join them on their quests, learn of Elphen history, become familiar with their ways and ultimately, fall under their Elphen-spell. If you also come to believe in Elphen and search carefully beneath the path of a falling star, you may find what appears to be a small glowing ember in the undergrowth; but be on your guard, for once you start the search it can soon become an obsession. Welcome to my gallery here on Saatchi Art, where you can view some of my Elphen Chronicles artworks for sale, along with those reproduced as Open Prints, available to order, directly from Saatchi Art. My creative soul lies in a deep-seated need to paint; whether at my easel in my Scottish Highlands-based studio, chronicling live events with paints & brushes, or demonstrating techniques. Painting is indeed my passion - my life's work, which encompasses the creation of Masterworks for collectors. My career as a professional artist and author has spanned five decades, creating and producing a wide-ranging body of works and projects – from Fine Artworks for collectors (more than one thousand principal selling works), to sharing my passion for the painting process with a worldwide audience of artists through thirteen published how-to books, a series of painting magazines and an extensive catalogue of online videos. Traditional techniques form the basis of my particular method and process of working, which I maximise and manipulate to achieve the effect of light – the signature feature that is present in every piece. I am particularly partial to oil painting, for there is nothing to surpass the sheer richness of this medium and the process. It is about painting in layers to create depth and using the inherent textures in a brushstroke. In oil painting we have a medium that can be opaque or transparent; thick or thin in its application, where the surface of the painting, being physical, affects the light falling on it. The method of working from dark to light, building from initial dark layers through to the tiniest ticks of pure white highlights is combined with the use of traditional techniques such as glazing and tinting (as per the Old Masters). Enriching and enhancing the surface quality of oil paint is the process I employ extensively to achieve the quality I seek. Yet, something else has also occupied a very special place in my heart, emanating from a childhood incident – now brought to life in ‘Paul Taggart’s Elphen Chronicles’, a multi-media project, embracing the three principal creative strands of art, writing and music. The artistic & written journey of ‘The Elphen Chronicles’ by Paul Taggart “As a child I spent many solitary hours in my Grandmother’s garden. One heavily overgrown area particularly entranced me, for within its depths lay a circular swathe of fine green grass.
