About The Artwork

The Baul community belongs to the Vaishnava sub-community and worships Lord Narayana or Krishna. Their exceptional talent in composing songs instantly using traditional musical instruments called Ektara and a small drum positioned at the waist is known. Begging is their primary occupation, and in exchange for their beautiful songs based on the spiritual doctrines of Hinduism, they ask for nothing in return. They travel barefoot, singing their beautiful songs as they journey from one place to another, and are primarily found in rural areas of Bengal. People donate to them in exchange for their songs. Having experienced their community many times, I have always been charmed by their innocent smiles and detachment from material possessions. They are completely immersed in the ecstasy of freedom and have no connection to the mundane world.

Born and raised in a baronial family in North Bengal, Amar Singha was fortunate to be thrust into a world of creativity at an early age, where colored pencils, crayons, and drawing sheets offered great solace from the kind of loneliness that accompanies stately culture. The flash of royalty that made up the world around him fostered his curiosity for deeper exploration, which he began to discover as soon as his pencils and crayons hit the paper. What was considered child’s play at that age catapulted him on a lifelong journey in search of greater truths, freedoms, and simple joys. Along the way, Singha picked up credentials from the Academy of Creative Art in Kolkata. In his final year of art school, he lost his father, which further flung him into the depths of an interior search—one that can best be described (insufficiently so) as a deep dive into the spiritual realm, an exploration into impermanence activated by those questions of life and death that plague us all. For about 16 years, Singha essentially disappeared from public life in order to listen closely for whispers of truth and emerged again using paints and brushes to translate the untranslatable through his art which he births in his home studio in Raghunathganj, a small village in West Bengal. STATEMENT - A conversation between ancestral Indian lineages and synthetic cubism allows me to prominent my emotions expressively. The use of colors demonstrates my sentiment that works to find hidden lofty things we usually ignore. The color itself becomes a subject that whispers for my sensation. Simplifying the composition produces uncluttered spaces that sometimes create a feeling of boundless joy followed by the expression of colors or sometimes inexplicable sensitivity of the subconscious mind. It also brings a calmness that immerses me deeply in the spiritual realm, followed by the past spiritual experience that makes sense of my creative spirit. A subtle emotional approach transforms my form into an abstraction that steadily expresses by line drawing. Drawing is a pivotal factor in my painting that help viewers discern the insides despite the abstract approach of my artwork. Amorphous brush strokes with acrylic paint create a little texture, but finally, it produces a calming smoothness that I enjoy. I then start drawing lines to make the details. Seeing how the object reveal under several abstract shapes in the painting cheers me.
