ABOUT THE ARTWORK
This work was inspired by the rural landscape of Southeastern South Dakota. I hope the viewer of my work will experience the same feeling of connection to the land that I feel. I chose to represent the barn because it is an agricultural icon that represents to me a time when our world was safe from the negative influence of corporate cultures our lives. When our food supply was safe and work was meaningful and profits were not just for share holders.

Paul was born in Viborg SD in June of 1967. Growing up on a farm in Southeastern SD has given Paul an intimate understanding of rural life and a unique perspective as an artist. Viewers of his work will not only perceive a sense of place but will also experience the complicated and sometimes contradictory feelings many rural residents experience over their lifetimes. The paintings are colorful, emotionally autobiographical and mirror the artist's feeling of connection to the land. Paul lives in the Black Hills of South Dakota with his wife and daughter. He is adjunct faculty at BHSU and when he is not teaching or painting he can be found playing guitar(sometimes singing) at local restaurants, bars, churches, coffee shops, festivals etc....
