Bent on Fixing Everything Painting

I am really excited about the works I am bringing to the fair this year. As always, it’s a little daunting deciding what to bring- old work, new work, vs something more experimental? It’s often hard to tell which paintings best represent me. Especially when the works themselves vary so much in style and colour palette. Determined to start the year afresh, I pulled out some canvases ranging between completely blank slate and ancient canvases that hadn’t quite worked out. I began working over them freely with different colours and brush marks- not thinking of anything in particular, just going by feel. My process always starts in this abstract way but pretty quickly forms suggest a landscape to me. All of a sudden a vertical line might suggest a tree, horizontal line might suggest the ground or a mountain range. It's pretty hard to get away from trees and hills. They almost haunt me sometimes! Although, finding a new looser and less laboured way to express them has been refreshing. I’m loving the way these paintings feel a little odd and unfinished. I’ve also been a bit obsessed with Australian Sky blue (you will find it in pretty much all of the new works) and metallic copper. I love the contrast.
