Between the Lines Painting

Painters are often obsessed with certain themes, colours, structures, returning to them again and again throughout their careers. Contrasting strong and deep reds and blues each under painted with other colours so the painting 'glows' and the presence of 'doorways' or 'gaps' are motifs that appear frequently in my work. Even if I could not consciously say why they are there, I am drawn to variations on this theme. Like most painters I cannot and do not 'duplicate' works however I do make series that reference one another and this is part of an ongoing group of paintings (now scattered from Los Angeles to Europe and beyond) exploring the feeling of both a physical place and also a decision or difficulty. In this piece the 'door' appears further away which may mean the issue is more complex to fix or that it is less of a concern. It may also signify a journey. It is also just a beautiful thing to look at with no thought or interpretation at all. The meaning in my paintings belongs to the viewer, not to the maker.
