Biophila Painting

"Biophilia" embodies a consequence of evolution whereby humans have an “innate tendency to focus on life and lifelike processes.” It supports our innate affiliation with nature comes from research demonstrating increased psychological well-being upon exposure to natural features and environments. In Welsh mythology, Blodeuwedd was created from wild flora to break a curse that prohibited a welsh prince, Lleu Llaw Gyffes form marrying a naturally born woman. However, he pays the price for tampering with nature and, on a wider connection, the story warns us to respect the boundaries nature requires to live in harmony. This painting portrays Blodeuwedd at the moment of her creation; neither quite human or plant. The flowers are almost all from my own garden which I draw and paint continuously to capture their life cycles from growth to decay. Behind the woman's innocent smile smolders an innate intensity and prevalence to overcome whatever imposition she might be destined for. Given that our modern ways of living, as prescribed by Western industrialised culture that stand in stark contrast to our evolutionary history, I hope the painting will inspire some sympathy from those that understand her story,
