About The Artwork

I love painting animals and telling their stories. This is one of my favorite mixed media pieces. It's an acrylic painting featuring a roughed-up photograph I took of a group of bison. Finding the bison was an adventure; my husband, son, and I spent the better part of a day driving around a prairie preserve in eastern Indiana, eager to spot some bison. But first, we ran into plenty of other buffalo enthusiasts who cautioned us that the animals were notoriously hard to find because the preserve is so expansive. We didn't let that deter us though and continued down more bumpy roads until our luck brought us to a small herd that was gathered not far from the fence. I climbed into the weedy overgrowth and slowly inched my way toward the fence as a large bison locked eyes with me. I noticed a light brown calf in the middle of the group and I sensed the bison who held my gaze wouldn't let me get much closer, fence or no fence. I quickly snapped a couple of photos and slowly inched back to the car. What a day! We'd found the bison! I'll never forget the look that momma bison gave me and the sense of quiet power that she held. Many of my animal paintings are inspired by dream stories, but this one is inspired by a living animal. The texture that the roughed-up photo print gives to the painting is one of my favorite parts. The original sold almost immediately, but prints are available.

I've been an artist in Kankakee County Illinois (not far from Chicago), for the past 12 years where I live with my son, husband, and an assortment of animal friends. I enjoy acrylic painting and have exhibited work in numerous festivals and galleries throughout the region. I have a penchant for painting en plein air and for drawing miniatures sized under 1 inch, but I'm best known for my animal portraits in acrylic and for encouraging other artists in my community to follow their passion. I organize and endorse an annual juried art exhibit for regional high school students that's been running for over 10 years. I'm also a writer; my first book is a sci-fi novel in verse that was published in 2019, and in 2021 I won 3rd place in a playwriting competition. These passion projects fuel my creative muses and keep me returning to my painting easel with vigor and joy. I love making art and know that my best work is always in front of me.
