I painted this piece during an art residency in a small village on the hills of Jerusalem. It was a very remote location, with nothing around but Mediterranean nature. The walk to the studio was a footpath shaded by old pine trees, tall sunflowers, mix roses' shrubs, lavender and a myriad of wild flowers. Every day I resisted the impulse to pick up the flowers and instead tried to bring onto the canvas the effect that walk had on me. An explosion of vivid petals bursting into tears, as the joy of this blooming nature was in high contrast with the dark solitude I felt while walking alone. One of the hardest period of my life was at the same time one of the most colourful and creative. Like dancing and sobbing in full sunlight.

Born in Modena, Italy Lives & works in London, UK Beatrice Dina's work explores themes of cross-cultural identity, migration, spirituality, and the fragility of human existence. Her vivid paintings merge at times lyrical abstraction with subtle representation, as the intent of her color-charged canvases is to connect with our deepest emotions and fears. Dina began her career in advertising as an art director, moving then to film production. Her diverse body of work includes documentary films, drawings, paintings, and sculptures. “I've always been attracted to the inner landscapes of human beings. When I paint, I work intuitively, not towards a narrative, like in filmmaking, but towards contemplation. I'm interested in the transcendental, the impermanence and transformation of all things; suffering and growth, human conflict, love and loss, and above all how we can arrive from the material to the immaterial.”
