ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Blown Away By Red is one of a pair -pairing with Blown with Red, also on display with Saatchi Art. Acrylic paints on raw canvas, the painting is surrounded by a light oiled wood surround and ready to be displayed. The painting is inspired by Modernist Painters and a visit to Sandra Blow's studio in St. Ives. I have used a combination of stencil and over painting to achieve depth in the reds. The inspiration comes from Sandra's vibrant limited palette and square format works, and also the sense of joy and exuberance that I felt when I visited that wonderful studio. This painting would ideally go somewhere fairly neutral to brighten and enliven a space. It is celebratory and perhaps most suitable as a gift between loved ones. If you love red, this painting is for you!

Originally from London, I believe my father, who was an artist and industrial designer, inspired my early life and love of "˜all things visual'. I studied textile printing and dyeing at Whiteland's College Putney in the 1970s, developing a love of colour and design. My tutor, Nora Proud, included photographs of my work in the Batsford book 'Simple Textile Dyeing and Printing'. In 2010, I was awarded a First Class Honours Degree in Fine Art at Glyndwr University, Wrexham, and have been painting and drawing ever since. This year, 2014 I completed my Masters in Fine Art Practice at the same University. I have developed an abstract expressionist style of painting reflecting my character and need to search for the "˜intangible" in life. I combine dyes and paints with collage and fabrics, layering, folding, shredding and tearing to create texture. I have a fascination with the role that fabric can play in an artwork, and can be quite destructive during the process, and frequently find that the end stages of a painting actually only begin after this destructive phase. This process has kindled an interest in the relationship between destruction and creation. These two appear to walk hand in hand, and I wonder sometimes if they are indeed perhaps inseparable? (Anselm Kiefer thinks so!) I am a founder member of the Inside Out Art Group : , and also a member of both the Borderland Visual Arts and Helfa Gelf Art groups. I exhibit and sell my work locally in venues such as Pandy Mill Gallery, The Willow Gallery Oswestry and Theatre Clwyd Mold. In 2010 I was short listed for the Signature Art Awards run by , and show and sell work in their gallery in London. In 2010 I was invited to display work in The Artists Alley, San Francisco (). I occasionally work to commission. Not all my work is displayed. October 2014 To see more of my latest works please also visit where some of my work is solely consigned to DegreeArt. ********* (I am proud to support CAT - The Centre for Alternative Technology, Machynlleth, having been a member since its first beginnings.)
