Daruma Zen ink painting and jikishi jinshin kensho jobutsu calligraphy. The art work is brushed on rice paper, mounted and ready to be framed. Bodhidharma, the first Patriarch of Zen in China, Japanese Daruma, Chinese Damo is depicted with bold ink brushstrokes. I have always been a great admirer of Zen Master Hakuin's Daruma paintings, and inspired by his example I have raised the brush and painted this expressive Daruma. The accompanying calligraphy summarizes the essence of the Zen, Chan teaching brought to China by Bodhidharma. It says: In Japanese: jikishi jinshin kensho jobutsu 直 指 人 心, 見 性 成 佛 In English: Point directly at the human mind, See its nature and become buddha. Size of the Bodhidharma painting in cm: h 138 x w 35 cm x 0,2 cm Please note that the white borders showing in the 'View in A Room' image are not on the original artwork.

My artwork comprises Zen calligraphy, watercolor and ink paintings, and abstract calligraphies. My mediums are ink, watercolors and natural pigments on rice paper, mainly Xuan paper. I wield the Chinese and Japanese brush, preferably the flexible sheep's hair brush. Many of my Zen calligraphies express the Emptiness teaching from the Heart Sutra, which has been the original inspiration for my Japanese calligraphy artwork. Other calligraphies focus on the teachings of the Diamond Sutra, Platform Sutra, or depict Zen koan, Zen poetry or single kanji. In my watercolors and ink paintings I strive for a pictorial synthesis of the subject, in the spirit of Japanese ink painting, using bold washes and vivid brush strokes.
