"Bonnie"
In my series "Strong Women" I portray strong, self-confident, contemporary women, whom I meet in daily life. Preferably women with whom I can show the multicultural society of the here and now. When I am struck by her charisma and inspired to paint her, I do not hesitate, step up to her and invite her to be my model. In order to make a more personal portrait, we have a few talks so I get to know her a little bit better.
I met Bonnie in the department store where she works as a manager. Her charisma caught my eye and that was the very beginning of this portrait.
I chose a large format and a perspective that suggests strength, in order to emphasize Bonnie's natural authority. I envisioned to portray the strong character of this ambitious woman without overshadowing the softness in her gaze. The Vlisco fabrics reveal her African roots and tell about the pile of beautiful cloths in her mother's closet.

the work is painted on linen, stretched on an aluminum frame.
