Like everyone, I’ve spent a lot more time at home over the past two years. As part of my new work from home lifestyle, I’ve spent more time tending to my garden and have begun making drawings of the flora around me. During the pandemic, I found drawing my plants from observation to be meditative and therapeutic. As the seasons changed I watched the plants transform and recorded their life cycle: sprouting, growing, budding, blooming, and finally fading. This drawing ritual has become an important part of my routine. The forms in my works on paper have slowly begun appearing in my paintings.I see my paintings as diary entries of memories of sensations. They are records of past sensory experiences. I am translating these memories of a touch, a smell, a taste, or something I saw into a painted language. Though the form of a flower or vine may seem to be the subject matter in a composition, the forms appear to be hazy just as a memory can feel. The forms in the painting could be what they seem but it’s not clear.
