About The Artwork

This work was inspired by conversations with former work colleagues who were non-binary or whom were exploring their gender identity. I was fortunate enough to be trusted and this in turn gave rise to very personal conversations about their journey – the struggles and the celebrations – the impacts of both gender dysphoria and gender euphoria. Most recently a very close friend talked with me about one of her childrens’ transition journey. Through all these conversations I learned much. My creative response was to produce a work that Celebrated individual identities, but also recognised that a space needs to be provided for future journeys. The purpose of the work is to generate a curiosity to learn more, to heighten awareness and to encourage support and acceptance as these journeys unfold. The square stretched canvas was chosen to match the “identity matrix”. Each symbol has its own clear representation, confirming its individual strength and commitment. Each symbol is cradled within the celebratory colors of Pride. I hope the scope, balance and harmony of the work reflects the value of all individualities. 2022/23 - Finalist Adelaide Perry Drawing Prize (NSW Australia) 2023 - Selected for inclusion in the 2023 London Art Biennale NOW OWNED BY THE ELTON JOHN AIDS FOUNDATION
