My work explores the symbiotic relationship between affects and art. On a psychological plane, the human compulsion to articulate our affects is crucial in our social model. Art, in all its disciplines, is the vehicle often used to verbalize our pathos. As a singer and a painter, my work always explores the emotions that stem from the act of singing and creating music. Through the use of mixed media, particularly media that repulse each other such as oil-based and water-based pigments, there is a process where this conflict forces me as the artist to surrender to a loss of control. This removes all inhibitions, thereby inducing the highest level of authenticity. The result is a colourful portrait of a psychological state of a given experience in music: abstract expressionistic snapshots recording various psychological affects, which at times even become a portrait of the music itself. Throughout this process I explore how I express and perceive my emotions, which in turn provokes the viewer to analyze and assess how they are affected by their own perception of each portrait.

Karen Santos is a Vancouver-based Mexican artist who has been devoted to the arts and to painting since she was four years old. She began her artistic training at an early age under the close tutelage of her mother, an avid painter, art teacher, and art psychologist herself. Karen continued her studies with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Visual Arts from the University of British Columbia. She subsequently completed a Bachelor of Music in Opera Performance at the Vancouver Academy of Music. With this background, Karen's work is inspired by the relationship between art, music, and psychology. Working mostly with wax and oil, she creates abstract expressionist portraits of the music as an alternate means of conveying the music itself. Karen has married both forms of art in new and groundbreaking ways demonstrating that only someone with her incredible tenacity is able to understand both disciplines so intimately and join them so eloquently. Karen is a member of the Seymour Art Gallery and Burnaby Arts Council. She has participated in various art exhibitions in the Greater Vancouver Area and has sold works internationally, including Mexico, the United States, and Australia.
