This work has been inspired by recovering memories of my childhood via landscape painting and observation in my new home in Spain. I feel a strong connection to my Armenian roots via this landscape. My first and powerful memory was of a landscape in Armenia when my parents took me there at the age of 5. I wanted to incorporate the famous Cave Ararat stone relief sculpture from Turkey which I have recently discovered online looking through armenian word search. This work is a part of a series of 4 paintings where I was exploring intuitive practices of art making, I use surrealist techniques of liberation of the unconscious through random mark making, and developing visual collages with hybrid characters set in imaginary architectural and psychological spaces. Each mark or bump on the canvas offers a possibility of excavation, unearthing layers of meaning and memories that are formed and fade in their detail with time, merging together, creating their own fantasms and distortions. I also used the remnants of the previous day pallete ( when dry, acrylic paint comes off the palette in skin-like form), creating abstracted islands that I attached to the painting. This gives me an opportunity to add a relief to my work as another type of language to highlight the transparent layers of the rest of the painting. The painting is made on primed canvas with artist quality Liquitex acrylic paint. It has been sealed with a protective, specialised matt varnish.
