About The Artwork

In considering what the narrative in this work included and still required as signifiers, I added the hand and orb as an intuitive act. For me, I started this painting during the last few days of 2019 and into early 202, while reflecting on different losses, hence the symbolism of my dog in white. The red arch light acts as an entry into another world. Not thinking beyond that, I'm learning that the orb signifies the 'celestial sphere' of the heavens. When I showed a friend this finished painting, they immediately shared the painting 'Salvator Mundi' by Leonardo da Vinci with me as it had just been in the news. I find this quite astonishing as I had never seen this particular work by da Vinci and felt a connection in that although people are different and may span lifetimes between them, they are the same. Wanting to add additional density to the paint, I returned to this painting in 2022 for layering.

I'm fascinated by the essence of painting itself—its process, how the paint moves on the canvas, and the vivid expressiveness of colors and textures that create a tangible and emotional bridge between my work and the viewer. The layers of paint invite you into a world of sensation and meaning that's yours to interpret. My approach often involves revisiting and reworking the canvas, much like the way relationships evolve and renew over time. My art reflects my journey—my introspections, connections with others, and, fundamentally, my relationship with painting itself. Human figures frequently emerge in my work, symbolizing the universal experiences of emotion, values, encounters, and the passage of time. These figures capture fleeting moments, bridging the present with the memory of a distant, earlier self. While I play with the balance between reality and imagination, I also embrace the unpredictable, using it to capture your attention and keep you engaged. A recurring theme in my work is visibility, particularly reflecting on my identity as a woman navigating a phase of life that often feels overlooked by society. It's this struggle for visibility, for recognition, that resonates through my art, connecting with viewers on a profoundly personal level.
