ABOUT THE ARTWORK

An image began creeping up on me, and then I decided on the title, which helped me to actually design this painting. Chalk cliff lit by a nacreous cloud came to me gently as an idea worth pursuing. It is rare that the title comes first, but when it does, I follow. The chalk cliff relates directly to the use of the palette knife and white acrylic in this work. The nacreous clouds part comes from the colours of these beautiful, transient objects which stuck in my mind. Apparently, we have been experiencing rather more in the way of nacreous clouds than usual. These Polar Stratospheric Clouds are, as the name implies, found usually in the polar regions and at very high altitude. Of late (in 2023), they have been appearing a bit lower, in the region of Scotland.

Nature is the inspiration for most of Carl's works. Plants, animals, skies, seas and seascapes in particular. Space holds a fascination too, as cosmic ideas are boundless. Carl works accompanied by music, played loud. Modern jazz, fusion and 70s progressive rock. Each piece chosen to accompany the style of the painting at hand. Carl was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1955 and then brought up in England but he has lived in rural France since 1991. 3 countries and 3 languages have resulted in a fairly creative view of the world around him. He has been active in photography for the past couple of decades, exhibiting his photos in Lot et Garonne and Haute Garonne. Most of his favourite photos, however, turned out to be accidents of focus or development. For the past few years, Carl has taken up painting with a vengeance; as if he is making up for lost time. He also carries through into his current work a keen eye for the unusual developed with his photography. His works are large scale, eclectic in style and bright in colour (as befits someone born in Brazil). You may be surprised by some of his more humorous works. There is always a bit of unreal in the real.
