ABOUT THE ARTWORK

STATEMENT: In this series, I explore Chaos as system—giving rise and collapse to non-linear hierarchies. This is the birthplace for symmetry — the foundation from which all natural laws spring. Here, Time and Motion are compressed by limitless geometry. We, as conscious creative beings, exist in the space at the cross-section in between, birthing the language that will give shape, pattern, reason to these abstract tales of infinity. PROCESS: My process for this series is focused on unfolding the most myopic expression of experience— that which is layered with dynamic impulse and emotion and has yet to reveal any sense of hierarchy or understanding. Maybe I catch glimpses of familiarity or a potential start of a pattern, but the motivation for this process is to yield myself to connecting with the moment by acting on pure intuition of expression. This is a fight to not simultaneously judge, attempt to analyze, or insert control over the marks and colors I make. It is a window for safe exploration of color and shape through play… the game is to layer as many marks that, to me, are chaotic. POETRY: I’VE GOT THE CHAOS … But what does she become? What were her movements leading up to this moment... and what will define her next? How would you solve the equation of her next move? > So then… / What is her drive? / What makes her important?… / What makes her not so? / What value does she hold as she is right now? / What motion could reveal dormant pattern within her?

Jori Johnson (b. 1989) is a Southern California native, currently based in Los Angeles, CA. Both her creative process and content of her work are interwoven with the mental and physical health challenges that she has learned to navigate beginning in her early 20's. While initially inspired by personal experience, her practice is then built upon the synthesis of interdisciplinary research across a variety of scientific fields, processed through mediums of painting, installation, creative writing, and musical composition. Though her overall practice is primarily focused within the visual disciplines, written and musical compositions are always actively informing the work she creates. Jori earned both her Bachelor’s of Arts in Fine Art and a Master’s of Fine Art from Azusa Pacific University, Azusa, CA (2010, 2018). Jori’s work has been exhibited nationally including Los Angeles, San Diego, Chicago, Nashville, Dallas, and Long Beach. Recent gallery shows include group exhibitions at Long Beach Institute of Art and Science in Long Beach, NJ and Brea Gallery in Brea, CA. This summer, Johnson co-curated and is exhibiting in a group exhibition of 6 other women artists, “Mending Space,” at Perspectives Space Gallery in Encinitas, CA.
