About The Artwork

The eigth in an on-going series of works exploring the styles/conventions of image-making from different cultures/times. The Chauvet Pont d'Arc Caves in the Ardèche, SE France contain some of the best preserved Upper Paleolithic paintings in the world, dating from at least 37,500 years ago. German film-maker Werner Herzog made a documentary about them: "Cave of Forgotten Dreams" which reveals their majesty and power. Here the obvious anomaly of a 'paleolithic' painting on canvas is augmented by the 'signature' which uses a font called Fred Flintstone. The term EFS (Ethnological Forgery Series) references the German rock group CAN, who in the 1970s produced their own musical variations on different cultural styles.
