"Chilled Passion" Painting

Siyuan Ren is a British-Chinese artist whose work centres on the peony, a flower rich in cultural symbolism and artistic history across East Asia.

Drawing on traditional Chinese Gongbi painting techniques, she works with ink and pigments on rice paper, silk, and panel, while also incorporating elements of oil painting and decorative arts. Her practice explores the meeting point between Chinese artistic traditions and Western ideas of beauty, creating works that are both culturally rooted and contemporary in their visual language.

Peonies form the foundation of her work. Through botanical studies, decorative compositions, and imagined narratives, she returns repeatedly to the flower as a subject through which to explore memory, atmosphere, ornament, and the relationship between nature and culture.

Combining meticulous craftsmanship with a romantic sensibility, her paintings seek to create moments of contemplation, bringing together observation, symbolism, and visual beauty within a distinctive East-West aesthetic.

Siyuan is a self-taught artist, and major influences in her work include contemporary oriental art, impressionism, and the Dutch Golden Age still-life flower paintings. Many of her paintings are created in the Gongbi technique, a Chinese classic painting technique characterised by meticulous and precise brushstrokes. She also likes experimenting with mixed media, using materials such as silk and wood, and techniques like burning or combining Gongbi techniques with oil painting.
