About The Artwork
The painting is of Ching Shih the Chinese pirate, I wanted to depict a strong woman lost in a moments reflection. She represents zanshin the remaining mind and the depth of true strength that is beyond the physical that is possessed by a woman who can rise to the very top of one of the most male dominated hierarchies in one of the most oppressive historical times for women. I paint in oil because I love the liquid almost tactile emotion it creates.
