ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Every religion has its origin. Depiction of legends and characters in the various religious historical events are mainly influenced by the culture or the society in which the religion was originated from. Currently, most religion had spread beyond borders of their country of origin. Nevertheless, these ancient idiosyncrasies remain unchanged. Many styles and movements have occurred throughout the history of art but had not much influenced the depiction of these religious characters. Taking Christianity as an example, the biblical events and characters are still depicted in the medieval and the renaissance art style. Most contemporary artists try to mimic these two artistic styles when it comes to the depiction of biblical events and icons. This had brought a lot of interracial debates especially in this 21st century. From my point of view, the best way to depict these religious events and characters is to find a contemporary parallel. It must be portrayed in accordance with each one’s own understanding.

Artist Statement My artistic style has continuously evolved, revealing our relationship with one another, and the entire biosphere which we inhabit. The quality and the contextual depth of my creations continue to inspire individuals in diverse societies and generations. I express my artistic ideas in abstract, realism, and surrealism. As an artist, who is passionate about colors, I work with diverse media such as oil paint, acrylic paint, oil and chalk pastels, color pencils, and charcoal with a cotton canvas as my preferred working surface. I also use found objects such as plastics, newspapers, et cetera in the form of recycled art to address environmental and sustainability issues. My works bear traces of Ghanaian cultural elements and elements from other cultures around the globe to advocate for intercultural unity. I believe everything on earth is interconnected, and humans are part of that equation. An innovative merger of cultures makes my works transcultural and transnational. Although my creative expressions, as well as my philosophy were influenced by Ghanaian traditional and modernist art, my themes reflect contemporary socio-cultural issues concerning the entire global community. I believe that the audience should not be distanced from the work but must rather be part of it, and one can experience that emotional immersion when looking at my works. Despite my knowledge of painting and other art genres, I have been attracted to the idea of repurposing discarded plastics and other obsolete solid materials into innovative artistic installations. This elevation of discarded used, and obsolete solid items accumulated in the natural environment can greatly contribute to the mitigation of their negative impacts on various compartments of the ecosystem. It also portrays interconnectedness of all earth’s diversity and the environment we inhabit.
