This painting is part of a series of work called Half Things.

In these paintings, vulnerable girls tough it out for their kudos, a young boy takes heroic and brave actions through snow storms and over cowboy terrain and duplicate characters compete with each other for superiority.

In her paintings Helen Ballardie explores ideas around identity and perception, truth and fiction. She displaces characters from their usual environments, and constructs ‘memories’ from a variety of disparate images.

Helen Ballardie graduated from Canterbury College of Art (BA Hons 1st class Fine Art) in1991. She was Artist in Residence at The Royal Shakespeare Company in 1994, and her work has been shown in museums and galleries and spaces through Europe and the UK. Her painting style sometimes reflects her previous work as a scenic artist, model maker, and a specialist decorator.
