About The Artwork

This artwork was inspired by an image I’d taken while walking along Bicentennial Coastal Walk from Narrabeen to Warriewood beach in Sydney. The soft yellow of the Banksia flower on a cloudless day looks fantastic when viewed against the far horizon of the ocean. Using a focal length of 210 mm and large aperture on the camera I blurred the sea with the horizon while my focus remained on the flower and the leaves. It was the colour palate provided by the leaves of the Coastal Banksia that urged me to paint this flower. When I sketched the image onto the canvas I was captivated by the complexity of the flower but also the elegance of the surrounding leaves. I like how the damaged leaves with blotches of orange, brown and yellow add energy to the soft focus of the purple brown branches of the Banksia tree behind. There are many coastal walks on the Northern Beaches in Sydney and a beautiful part of these walks is spotting a Coast Banksia in flower. This flower from Banksia integrifolia is just one of the four species collected at Botany Bay in 1770 by Sir Joseph Banks* , and now this artwork would make a proud addition to any home collection. I was born in Papua New Guinea and lived on a remote rubber plantation before moving to Sydney in 1971 at the age of 7. I was finding it hard adjusting to the city and my mother encouraged me to take up oil painting. Having won an art competition when I was 10, the judges recommended that I study at the local TAFE on a Saturday morning. I completed one term but felt out of place with students who were all over 16 years old, so I did not continue. I was also a TV junkie, we had no TV in Papua, and staying at TAFE meant missing out on Hey Hey It’s Saturday. It took me 40 years to rediscover painting. The one constant in my work is to find a new project and during my break from painting I have been a project manager in Information Technology. This kept me in a world with projects, and here too I learnt that even the smallest piece of data contributes its meaning towards each information system. The other constant motivating me in life is to finish a project so I can start a new one. My artworks and book Digital Dreaming all come under my brand names of Soul Assets and RLB-Soulassets.
