This mixed media painting was inspired by a french counting tool that was used in primary schools in the 1970s. Little painted wooden blocks of varying lengths representing the numbers 1-10 a little 1cm sq cube representing the number one and a 10cm long block representing number ten. I have a box of them and the tactile nature of them still satisfies me now. Even more satisfying to make my own and reassemble them into this composition, The piece is made from birch wood painted using carefully mixed inks and acrylics and they are blended to a consistency that allows the grain of the wood to show through. 41cm x 50cm x 5cm Framed in a white painted wood box frame with a UV perspex glaze.

Abstract artist, Amelia Coward is renowned for her explorations into mixing, blending and grading colours, with a growing international profile. Born in 1975, she holds a 1st class Honours from Central St Martins and MA from the Royal College of Art. Her artworks can be found in both private and corporate collections worldwide. Amelia creates artworks that focus on the interaction of colours combined with the carefully composed spacial balance between geometric elements such as circles and stripes. Influenced by her woven textile training she uses laser cutters much the same way as she was trained to use a loom, cutting geometric shapes then reassembling them in patchwork compositions. Located in a traditional Oast Barn in the Kent countryside, Amelia combines her prolific making of new pieces with her commercial giftware business, Bombus. Each influences the other. Amelia has a team of creative makers in her studio to help to assemble, photograph, frame and pack all the works.
