Acrylic, metallic acrylic and permanent marker ink on 200 g/m2 gsm Favini paper.

“I'm hoping to make a new thing for the world that remains in the mind like a new species of living thing.” Frank Auerbach

Painted in the days leading up to Christmas of 2015, Conflicted was a scaled up version of ideas and techniques I had been wrestling with throughout the year on a smaller scale. I often scour the internet and perform Google searches for images of people who interest me. People who are posing a certain way or emoting a quality which excites me. I often subtly edit these photographs by flipping or rotating them digitally for instance, changing the colour or style of the clothes they are wearing or altering their build. I then transpose the result onto paper or stretched canvas. The images often feel staged even sterile before I work from them. They feel very different by the time I am finished with them - very alien.

This piece has a reflective shimmering quality and is crimpled and creased in parts due to being heavily worked/washed. Please refer to detail images.

This piece is set in an ultra-modern, bespoke, plexiglass box frame. Handmade in Italy, the plexiglass filters damaging UV rays, and allows light to spill in evenly from all sides.

Signed, titled and dated on the front. Signed, titled, dated and stamped on the reverse.

Milan-based British artist Denholm Berry approaches portraiture with an innovative and unconventional methodology. Blending psychological spaces with expressive physicality, the figures presented in the works are at once anonymous and inviting – emotions and identities are open to the viewer’s interpretation. “My hope is that, by filtering concepts in this unusual way, my obscurations will become paradoxically revealing.” Denholm’s unique artworks have been featured in many Saatchi Art collections and are held in private collections worldwide.
