ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Work on paper. This piece and any other that looks broken down into quadrants or blocks surrounded by a light border are all mostly watercolour with some light pastel applied over. I determine what the shapes are going to be before I start, paint them where I want them, and then work the background around them. I have to work this way because with watercolour you only get one chance to leave a light area showing and that is at the start of the painting. This painting has vertical line work created with coloured pencils. The watercolour in the individual shapes is applied more loosely here than in some other paintings in this style. There's a lot of very wet areas of concentrated colour that were left to "bloom" on the surface.
