This artwork is inspired by Jean-Léon Gérôme’s "The Truth Coming Out of Her Well", where truth is personified as a struggling and isolated figure. Similarly, I wanted to personify critical thinking, depicting how it is overwhelmed, distorted, and eventually dissolved in the modern world. Drawing from Francis Bacon’s approach to distortion, I explored the idea of thought unraveling under pressure. The work reflects the constant burden placed on critical thinking, not only by modern mass media and social media, but also by the social pressures and imposed concepts of normality that permeate society. This artwork serves as a critique of those who believe they exercise critical thinking, while unknowingly absorbing distorted or unverified information. The figure in the painting represents how easily thought can be misled or manipulated by external forces, leading to a false sense of understanding. The red accents convey the internal conflict and intensity of these pressures, contrasting with the muted blues and greys, which evoke a sense of quiet tension. The painting invites viewers to reflect on how perception can be warped, and how critical thinking requires constant vigilance and reflection to avoid being influenced by misleading information. I used a combination of acrylic and oil paints to create both texture and depth. Acrylics allowed for quick layering in the background and swirling clouds, while oil paints provided richness and detail for the distorted figure. Inspired by symbolist surrealism, I aimed to capture the disintegration of critical thought, using abstraction to represent the fragmentation of ideas. The sharp red contrasts with the soft blues and greys, drawing attention to the pressures of information overload and the quiet struggle to maintain clarity in a world filled with external noise and social conformity.
